And it even offered a digital dash, or a white analog dash!

I like the 95-99 Maxima/I30 better though:

Really? Looks pretty bland to me.

At any rate, things change. They could never sell a car that plain now because people want unique and/or attention-grabbing styling.

Are you kidding me?

I owned a 1990 Maxima. It was ugly as balls. That thing was one of the most boring looking blobs of car to exist, even if it drove wonderfully and was shockingly fast for its time.

How, in any way, is that better looking than this:

Kinja'd!!!

Or did I miss some serious sarcasm?

To each his own. I like it, then again I like a lot of weird stuff.

I heard the V6 in that car was one of the best engines of its time.

My grandparents had one exactly like that. It was pretty fun to drive, though I liked their manual Accord coupe a lot more, overall. The rear quarter windows had this sticker:

Kinja'd!!!

letting the world know that it was a 4-door sports car.

Yeah it's pretty awesome. And lots of power and a fairly light car for its size (just a shade over 3000 lb).

Every person that nearly hits/kills/brushes/taps/bumps/shoves/pushes/tackles me is an asshat driving one of these. I have no respect for that car anymore, at least in NY. Everyone that drives it here is a complete asshole. Same goes for the G37.

Oh, no doubt. The Drivers are absolutely terrible.

The car itself is wonderful though. It's got New Porsche Syndrome, except no one actually professionally races them, which is even worse.

It looks good when it has the extra trim pieces on it. I seriously think that the above posted gen Maxima was a competitor to the 5 series. It just looks like a VIP car.

You whippersnappers who think the 1989 Maxima is ugly or boring have no sense for how dusty and dry the automotive sedan landscape was in those days. For context, here was the previous year's rectilinear Maxima:

Kinja'd!!!

And everyone's favorite standard-bearer, the Camry? Not a sales worldbeater yet:

Kinja'd!!!

GM sold several differently-badged variants of this saucy number:

Kinja'd!!!

It is into this hopelessly square and boring world that Nissan introduced the restyled Maxima, kitted out with a truly sweet V6.

The Maxima dropped into the new world order of worn-soap sedan styling led in sales by the Ford Taurus ...

Kinja'd!!!

... which copied the groundbreaking Audi 5000/100:

Kinja'd!!!

Toyota finally got around to copying the Maxima in 1992, and took over the world:

Kinja'd!!!

To my eye, the old Maxima still looks good. It acknowledges the importance of clean aerodynamics, but does not look like it stayed under the modeler's heat lamp too long. It has very little stylistic filigree, retaining a simple and purposeful aspect that is all too rare these days. The car had plenty of features, was reasonably sprightly for its day, and was affordable. And oh, that low beltline ...

Yes, my family had one. And we trading in a Chevy Celebrity Eurosport to get it, so I know a little something about the automotive mire out of which that generation of Maxima was born.

Totally agree.

Doesn't hurt that they were great cars.
